WSPD
in "Performance" Recess for 2001:
WSPD has
gone into a "performance" recess for 2001. This situation was brought about by
the band's inability to locate a suitably qualified Pipe Major interested in taking on an
ambitious grade IV band. Band members were unaminimous in wishing to pursue a competition
programme over the next few years, and such a programme, with its exacting musical and
leadership requirements, somewhat narrows the field of potential Pipe Majors.
Instead of
joining forces with another band for the competition season, as WSPD did in 1999-2000, it
was felt easier overall for band members simply to play with another band. This avoids
uniform, repertoire, and management problems associated with joint band efforts.
Accordingly, most WSPD members are now playing with the City of Wellington Highland Pipe
Band No 2, and are looking forward to an enjoyable season.
The band's
legal status as an entity is unaffected by the recess. Assets and membership have been
retained, pending a review at the end of next season. The band has simply elected to do no
performing this year. Arrangements have been made for the No 2 City of Wellington Band
(comprising most WSPD members) to meet WSPD's ANZAC Day commitments.
It is
unfortunate that WSPD has not been able to capitalise on the successes of recent years,
but the drum corps (top of grade IV in 2000) and pipers will have excellent development
opportunities with the City of Wellington No 2 band which competes in grade III. |
